Slept well, however, woke to find everything wet with condensation. The after effects of all the rain, damp atmosphere and wet clothes. What a pain! Spent an hour or so wiping all ceilings and windows, then as the sun began warming the boat, got all of the still damp, clothes outside. We decided that soon after breakfast we ought to head out for a walk into town to warm up and get some exercise. The sun was baking! We were sweating very quickly. Managed to get a bucket, socket set and then into Migros (supermarket) for provisions. They had a terrible supply but got sufficient water. Wandered back to Marina where we managed to complete a few jobs. I washed some clothes, hung outside to dry, really good feeling better for that :) Kevin cleaned outside boat tidied ropes and filled water tanks. After lunch, we decided to venture into town again, milkshake required. Bought mushrooms and bread as well as some rope for the fenders. I was getting a bit knackered so, back to the Marina for a snooze. Tea was chicken nuggets, mash and beans, simple yet effective :) then settled down for the evening. Bit nervous as to how tomorrow will go, need to tie up to a pontoon which is barely visible, complete the customs check, then sail 25 n.m to a very sheltered bay!! Piece of cake if the boat behaves !!

Woke pretty early as wind picking up creating lots of boat movement. Had breakfast while watching the wind gauge hit 33 knots in gusts! Getting rather concerned about our position on the outside of the Marina wall. Within a few minutes of Kevin tightening lines, the marina guys were with us, planning a move inside the marina, on a pontoon for protection. They adjusted ropes, added fenders, altered our tender then, without any stress undid all lines and manoeuvered us around the pontoon's. They make it look so damned simple in gale force winds and looking like drowned rats. Really impressed with them all, such a considerate team. Once retied we felt so much safer, and had a freebie coffee in the restaurant across the pavement. Extra bonus is Internet :) so we sat inside for an hour or so, then as the rain seemed to settle, we decided on a walk into town. The sky just got blacker and blacker!! Had a milkshake got some shopping then made a break for the marina. Too late, the heavens opened half way back to our boat. We were soaked! Drying off in a confined space is not easy, everything needs to hang up, and nothing to hang things on. Once dried, I cooked chicken, pasta and veg in a tomato sauce, turned out really well. Settled for the evening with some music, whilst revising our plan for Monday. So far, the weather is good for tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday. However, Wednesday is really windy again and rain is to follow for a few days, great!! Could really have done with a break in the weather. Woke at 7, after a really good nights sleep. Very little noise or movement. Watched a cruise liner come into port, and were surprised to see a TUI logo!! Thought they had stopped sending them here. Had cuppa and breakfast before 8am, knowing that the EGG guys may turn up........and 08.30 they were here, took our battered alternator away to be refurbished. We decided to go into town for replacement impeller and water. Found so many boat related shops!!! Never seen so many suppliers in one street, which is next to the Marina. Got what was needed 130 TL for 2. Stopped for a coffee and to watched the cruise passengers disembark, all wearing vest tops and shorts, in March ! guess what we were wearing?? Spoke to agent regarding customs who would like to see the boat today in order to check us out, oops, we are engine less!! She will ring again later. Back on board, had simit (sesame circle of bread, yummy) for lunch then walked over to Marina cafe for internet. Beautiful day until wind appeared at lunchtime. Guys with alternator arrived at 3pm fitted and rechecked everything. They spotted the fan within the engine compartment, was broken and raced off to town to replace it for the bargain price of 70.2 Turkish Lira or £17. Made a Chilli for tea, then out for a walk to town. Spoke to agent to explain engine problem has delayed us, and now weather will prohibit us from leaving the following day. We are allowed to wait in Albatross Marina for as long as we need. Found some waterproof coats and trousers XXX large sizes only! Stopped in Marmaris Marina for a well deserved beer. Then the rain called off play, back in a taxi to Albatross. Attempted a shower, no hot water or water pressure in the Marina Rest rooms, abandoned that and headed back for showers on board. Hot water, bliss :) settled to catch up with events and read up about engines!! Woke at 7.30 ish, sea much calmer, large swell overnight. Awaiting assistance for the engine. Kevin decides he wants to dive in, to look at the water intake hole in hull, so swim shorts on and hole inspected, all clear. We both showered which was pretty impressive, very hot water!! Felt better, dried towels in the sun too, bonus :) Decided to play with the rib and engine, Kevin wants to put a second anchor for stability. So in the rib we go....it started, which was a help! Managed to secure a second anchor with no issues.
A few minutes later, a fishing boat emerges with what appears to be our technical team. They, after much deliberation, decided it was the impeller and changed that. Kevin had already removed and inspected that, it looked absolutely fine! They left on their little fishing boat, very rubbery burning smell continued even after they sailed away from us........but we have an engine, yipee. They insisted we start travelling, so they could check we were functioning properly before they left, we were not quite prepared. Had to take in 2 anchors and stow everything, switch off stop taps and fiddle with rib to secure it, ready for the journey. So we waved them off after 10 mins, feeling content and organised before we moved again. Once underway, we were motoring mostly as the wind was directly in front, bit reluctant to put out sails so close to land and marker buoys. The little fishing boat was, by now a blur on the horizon. A few warning alarms came on from the battery meter saying, high voltage, not sure how or why, but it happened yesterday also. This was mentioned to the EGG mechanic, who didn't really take much notice. After about 2 hours, engine tone changed, then .............. it stopped completely again!!!! Panic stations, Sails out pretty sharpish as huge potential to drift quite close to the land. Kevin, back on the phone to EGG, who will send out assistance again! A few phone calls later, we were told to head towards a marina on the east side of Marmaris bay. Sounds great, but when you have to go under sail ....... Not so easy! Came into the bay but the wind was sheltered by the land on either side, so it took a lot of fiddling to achieve wind in the sails. We were met by the Albatross Marina guys on a rib, they were awsome, just took over and expertly sailed into the marina, and moored, rather impressive. 15.6 n.m total today, taking 4 hours 22 mins from Dereagzi bay to Albatross Marina therefore 2.30 mins sailing, 2 hours on the engine. Once on shore the Albatross tech team decided that the fuel switch was switched off. Very confusing as 4 hours of motoring in two days on no fuel !! that sounds very unlikelyl. Mentioned the warning lights and the electrician suggested an alternator problem. Great, impeller, engine and alternator all in two days :( So EGG informed and will be with us in the morning. This is becoming a bit of a habit! In the mean time, we had to speak to the agent regarding our boat transit log, as in......we have to check out at Marmaris as our boat was a charter vessel. Then we travel to Datca to check back in as a private vessel under our ownership. We called the agent, they collected our papers and will ring us when complete, but ......it cannot be initiated until 10.30 tomorrow, great! Oh well an evening in Marmaris. So we walked into town, not too far but roads will be poorly lit later, we left the boat at 5 pm. Had a Lovely (Tavuk guvec, or chicken casserole) garlic bread and beer. Kevin feeling better now! Didn't really want to eat out, but felt we needed a break. Cost....90 Turkish lira (£22.50) taxi 20tl Back on board to relax, tired and getting a bit chilly now. Started out at 08.00 hours having had breakfast and cuppa. Wind improved from the gusts of the previous day!! Slept poorly as noise around boat very off-putting. Kevin slept in salon most of night, worried the gusts would cause the anchor to drag too much. Came out of the bay turning south, met some wind very early on, so sails up within an hour, sailing on close reach mostly. Sailing with no problems, until wind moved onto bow. As we needed to reach Marmaris to complete the paperwork, (I will explain this later) we switched onto engine. Kevin feeling pretty rough with sea sickness. Tablets taken, with little effect. Decided to anchor overnight in the nearest bay. Just at that point, the engine packed up completely!! Managed to sail our way into the nearest bay, quite a long way to go still. As we entered the bay, the Turkish Navy came towards us in a rib declaring the bay restricted. At this point with very variable winds we had to tack a few times to find enough wind to get out the bay. Eventually deciding on another bay more southerly. Brought Kejstral to a stop under sail and anchored safely. Well what a relief ! In 12 feet of water we managed to settle for the evening, Spoke to EGG (the broker) about the engine problem, they will send someone out in the morning. Kevin feeling crappy still. At around 7 pm with no food eaten,he crashed out and only surfaced once for a wee. I stayed awake until 9.30 pm, then dozed on sofa for a few hours before climbing into bed. Total miles 40.4 n.m 6 hours of sailing Woke early, well Kevin did! I stayed I bed until 07.30 had breakfast then off for wash ready for the day.
By the time we arrived back at 'Kejstral' workmen were there with chart plotter being attached. Seemed to be a damp problem. Well it works now ! Shopping for provisions, Migros and Bim, the best choices of items. Spent lots as usual, mainly fresh food supplies. Meat bread veg etc. Back on board to unpack then had a sandwich on board for lunch. last visit to E G G to say goodbye, they were at lunch so we came back to have a go at opening both sails, mainsail was pretty stiff, seemed to stick but eventually, we managed to furl it in again. Setting sail......so we closed all hatches, stowed everything safely. Called the marina to leave, unhooked the electric source and turned off all stopcocks. Started engine, untied one stern line, loosened the remaining line and the marina guys appeared. Undid the bow line and quick release of the last stern line and we are off!! Gentle cruise on the engine just to clear the marina. Within 10 - 15 minutes we had the main sail opened, amazing!! Then the Genoa followed, all went out with no problems. Pretty scary trying to do this without Cumhur there to hand. ( our sailing course tutor) Managed to sail to our first bay, it took 2 hours and 30 minutes. Wind was a fluctuating 10-11 knots with gusts of 20 knots. Travelling mainly on a broad reach, reefing in the main due to gusts. Total mileage was 10.8 n.m. Anchored in a small bay, thought it should be pretty protected, however, gusty most of the evening. Kevin fiddled with anchor and supported it with an additional rope. Caught a mercan, first fish of the trip!! Threw him back as a little small to eat. Woke ready for the day ahead, only to be faced with torrential rain, lasted for most of the day. Not a good start :( Went to EGG, paid them for their hard work then organised to see 'Kejstral' go into the water. By the time we were taken to the hard standing......she was already en route to the Marina. What a shame, we did get to see her arrive at the pontoon and have her sails attached and hoisted which was great :). We left them to finish fiddling and went for lunch (tuna sandwiches and chips). Called into a boat hardware shop for a few bits too. Called into Jasmine apartments to let them know we were leaving, as they had kindly offered us storage of our car and extra night if needed, with them. We packed up and said goodbye, very grateful once again for their hospitality. Called back to EGG for handover and plan for our Marmaris visit. Staff took us through the controls and functions of each part, however chart plotter not switching on at all. Technicians arrived and removed offending article, will be back tomorrow morning apparently! Back to the car, belongings deposited into a trolley (with complimentary wobbly wheel), Between really heavy downpours, we managed to get everything inside before the next soaking. Spent a few hours unpacking and organising everything, good feeling to have your boat filled with your own stuff. Feeling exhausted we wandered out to get enough shopping for an evening snack, then settled down to toasted cheese sandwiches yum :). Showered at 8.30 pm, rain just stopping now, then off to bed for our first sleep on board. Trip to Gocek, day 1
Set off from Akbuk at around 08.00 am, Kevin was awake at 04.40!! I tried to get back to sleep, woke at 07.00, had breakfast then packed rest of stuff into car. Packed up house ready for a week / ten days away. Weather pretty cloudy mostly, sun out occasionally. Called into Marmaris en route, to collect our precious Sailing Captains Licences and VHF radio certificates! Exciting :) Then headed onto Marmaris seafront to have a spot of lunch. Drove straight to Jasmine apartments, met by owner, really nice man and his wife, extremely helpful family. Dumped our stuff then headed for Marina to see if E G G were open (Sunday) guess what...... No! :( Had a coffee and dry bun in coffee shop. Walked along the shoreline to the boat yard, might get to see 'Kejstral'! walked past her once, walked through the whole hard standing, before eventually spotting her back at the beginning!! Found her all painted and almost ready for relaunching. Fenders on but no sails yet. Really excited now :) had a beer on the seafront then headed back to change and go for food. On the way we found West Marine, or East marine as it has been renamed! Spent 1000 tl on glasses, cutlery place mats, front entrance mat and a few little bits. Took those back to car then changed for dinner. Had a lovely sweet and sour chicken glass of wine, then ready for bed. Slept well |
